Frequently Asked Questions

All of Bike On’s Mountain Bike Coaching programs are about having fun in a low pressure, supportive and inclusive environment. We aim to develop a life long passion for the joy and excitement of mountain biking by allowing kids to have fun, ride with mates and take their riding to the next level in a progressive manner under the supervision of PMBIA qualified coaches.

All our programs are open to a wide range of ages and skills and we run all programs with multiple coaches and multiple groups so your child will participate with a group of students of a similar ability and work on developing skills at a level appropriate to them.

Most sessions will have the instructor introducing a particular focus skill, practicing this skill in a controlled environment so the kids become familiar with it, then we spend the rest of the session riding around putting it into practice on the trails.

We run programs for all standards from beginner to advanced race programs. Our programs cater to kids 5-17 years of age. To participate in a program, riders must at least be capable of:

  • Confidently riding a bike on smooth dirt surfaces.
  • Stopping a bike using hand brakes without placing feet on the ground.
  • Be prepared to ride up hills. Please be aware these are group programs. Although we cater to young children, to avoid adversely impacting the groups all participants MUST have the resilience and ability to ride up hills without dismounting and walking.

Some programs that only cater to more advanced riders will have additional requirements and different age recommendations. Please note suggested ages are just indicative but if outside these ages please consider contacting us to discuss suitability.

Bike Requirements
The bike must be of a standard that doesn’t represent an unreasonable safety risk when riding on mountain bike trails. A suitable bike will have:

  • Functional hand brakes for both the front AND rear wheels (No foot brakes permitted)
  • Correctly adjusted and well maintained gears (Bike must have gears)
  • Tires with a reasonable amount of tread
  • Minimum tire size of 20” – It is highly unlikely that bikes with smaller wheels will be suitable for any programs.
  • Well maintained and serviced

All programs come with completely free bike safety checks, conducted by Bike On which also includes free basic adjustments (excludes parts and labour costs to fit).

*Please note some more advanced programs have additional requirements

Additional Equipment Requirements
The following additional equipment is compulsory for all programs:

  • A correctly fitting Australian Standards approved helmet – We strongly suggest a full face helmet
  • Enclosed footwear – We suggest MTB specific footwear
  • Water AND a method of carrying it
  • A tube that is suitable for your bike

Please note Instructors are already required to carry a significant amount of equipment and heavy backpacks as part of their role. They have very limited space in the backpacks, please do not assume them to be in a position to carry participant’s water or snacks

*Please note some more advanced programs have additional requirements

We would also strongly recommend the following protective equipment:

  • Full face helmet
  • Knee and elbow pads
  • Full finger gloves

Ultimately, we will allocate kids to groups that are suitable for their level of skill and stamina. This is done by a basic riding skills assessment on the first week and ongoing feedback from their coach. As students’ progress, they will be moved up groups as required. Most of our programs cater to all levels of riders, so we will have a suitable group for them.

While we make every effort to allow friends to ride together, we cannot put kids up into groups that they are not ready for. Kids will typically have the opportunity to drop down a skill level if they request, but this is up to the child in question and may impact what they learn.

Bike On is all about development. We can assist your child from their first MTB steps through to becoming an instructor or participating in our race team. Many of our younger instructors are actually Bike On students who have progressed to the point where they hold PMBIA coaching qualifications and now coach kids for us.

Weekly Programs

In the interest of transparency and to avoid disappointment, we’d like to make it clear that all programs are priced on the assumption that 7 out of 10 weeks will run each term. However, we will run all 10 weeks of term at no additional charge if conditions allow (essentially providing up to 3 free sessions per term and some degree of flexibility for students that skip weeks for various reasons). In normal circumstances, participants will get more than the 7 weeks, in very rare circumstances they may not. In order to ensure space for your child, a booking reserves the space for each week of the term. Low weekly costs are achieved by selling spaces as a term long program and are not possible by selling weekly spots on a casual basis. As with most term or season long group sports, they are not costed to include credits, refunds or alternative classes for weeks missed for any reason.

If you envisage missing the majority of weeks, you may wish to pay the week-by-week casual fee of $75 however this is strictly subject to availability on the week in the group that is suitable for your child. No guarantee of availability of casual spots on any given week are given and availability changes over the term.

In the event of inclement weather (heavy rain, storms etc.) we may look to postpone, modify or cancel the session, but will attempt to deliver the majority of classes. As a result, we do ride in the rain with due consideration to safety. We will make every effort to deliver all sessions in any given period, but the program pricing assumes that events beyond our control may result in some programs not running. Bike On strictly adhere to capacity numbers for all programs and cannot typically accommodate missed or cancelled sessions by moving kids around between different programs week to week.

Holiday Programs

Credits and refunds are only offered for holiday programs we cancel. Where children elect not to ride for some or all of the program for any reason including weather, tiredness other issues, refunds or credits are not typically provided. A full overview of our policy is here LINK REQUIRED

Bike On offers subscription programs, that are charged on a month-by-month basis.

Kids enrolled in subscription programs come to their selected after school or weekend programs during term, and over school holidays can come to a wide variety of programs at no additional cost (past the monthly fee). Many of our programs sell out and a subscription guarantees a space on going, until cancelled or paused.

Subscriptions also come with a range of other benefits for parents too including:

  • Access to free ad hoc adult’s MTB coaching groups
  • Discounted weekend and weeklong MTB holidays
  • 10% off Bike servicing at Venture Cycles
  • 10% of suspension servicing at Black Art MTB

There are no minimum enrolment periods and subscriptions can be cancelled at any time. Refunds and credits are not provided for the unused portion of the month; however, you are free to utilise the enrolment to the end of the month in which you cancel.

NON-SUBSCRIPTION Options

We do offer the majority of our programs as a non-subscription, pay up front term by term option. In many circumstances, these are more expensive than a subscription option. These are only available in the lead up to each term or for holiday programs. If you do not see the term only program you are looking for, please contact us.

Term only programs are sold in the lead up to each term. They are a pay upfront purchase of the entire term block and do not automatically renew at the end of each term. They do not include the Bike On jersey that is included with subscription programs. Term Only programs do not include school holiday programs and participation in holiday programs will require a separate booking and payment.

If you would like to trial a Bike On program, we would strongly encourage you to sign up for a subscription from $139.99 per month (cancel any time, no obligation to continue after the first 4 weeks). This will give your child 4 weeks to try out the program, get to know the coaches, other kids in the groups and develop the skill required to start enjoying MTB riding.

Alternatively, single casual lessons are available at $75 and are subject to availability, please contact us to arrange a single trial lesson.
