The Bike On pathway
One Sport, Many Directions
Most sports have one ladder: get picked, get better, get picked again. Mountain biking has several. Some of our riders ride purely for fun and friendship. Some want to try racing. Some turn out to be very fast. And some discover they love helping other people ride, and turn that into a qualification they can take anywhere in the world.
Our coaching is built so every one of those directions stays open, and riders can change lanes whenever they like.
Pathway one
Riding for Fun
This is where most riders start, and plenty stay. Weekly sessions with mates, new trails, new skills and a coach who notices the small wins.
There is no pressure to compete, and there doesn’t need to be. Riding as a social activity is a perfectly good reason to ride, and it builds all the same skills, confidence and fitness.
Pathway two
Learning to Race
Some riders get curious about racing, and we help them try it in a way that feels achievable.
We come to the races
Our coaches spend the weekend with riders at selected races, including the Fox Superflow series.
Lines and runs
We ride with them, show them the lines and talk through every run.
Backed all day
In formats that allow it we ride alongside them, and we are there from first practice to the finish.
Having an experienced coach there for a first race turns a nerve wracking day into a good one, and teaches riders how to prepare, how to walk a course and how to handle pressure.
Pathway three
Racing Seriously
For the riders who catch the bug, our Advanced Development Program takes things further, with coaching on harder terrain, road trips to premier South East Queensland trails and selected events.
We have had riders start with us at ten or eleven on their first basic mountain bike and be winning state championships by fourteen. The credit belongs to them and their families: the hours, the commitment and the courage. But it is built on years of good coaching, one progression at a time.
Our sessions focus on skills, so riders chasing podiums will also need to put in fitness work on their own time.
Pathway four
From Rider to Coach
This is the part we are proudest of. Bike On is an authorised course provider for the PMBIA (Professional Mountain Bike Instructors Association), the international body for mountain bike instructor certification, so we train and certify coaches right here in Queensland.
Riders from our programs can gain their entry level PMBIA Level 1 from age 15, and Level 2 at 18. Half of our current instructors came through our programs and hold their Level 1. Some have gone on to Level 2, and some have taken their qualification overseas to coach in Whistler, Canada.
A first job
Plenty of our riders start in our shop, then move into coaching.
A skill that travels
PMBIA certification is recognised internationally, opening up working holidays in bike parks around the world.
A career
The pathway runs all the way to Level 4, the top tier in the industry.
What it is really about
More Than Results
Race results are great, but they are not the point. The point is young people who are confident, capable and responsible for their own choices, with a lifestyle that keeps them outdoors and skills that can open doors for the rest of their lives.
Whether a rider ends up on a podium, in a coaching bib or simply riding with mates for decades, the pathway has done its job. Read more about what mountain biking gives kids.
